De’Longhi La Specialista Opera: assisted tamping, manual milk and hot + cold espresso

La Specialista Opera is the step up for someone who wants to stay hands-on with espresso while removing one of the messiest variables: tamping. It combines an integrated 15-setting grinder, Smart Tamping with 20 kg of even pressure, Active Temperature Control, a powerful manual steam wand, Cold Brew and Espresso Cool.

Smart Tamping
Pull the lever for a clean, repeatable 20 kg tamp instead of tamping by hand.
15 grind settings
Sensor Grinding Technology helps deliver a consistent dose as you change grind size.
Cold Brew + Espresso Cool
Dedicated cold-extraction recipes in under five minutes.
Commercial-style steam wand
Manual microfoam control for latte art, dairy milk or milk alternatives.

Opera vs Arte Evo vs Touch vs Maestro

Choose Opera over Arte Evo if Smart Tamping and Espresso Cool are worth the upgrade. Choose Touch instead if you want the machine to guide grind/dose settings on a touchscreen and automatically froth milk. Choose Maestro if you want the most advanced hybrid approach, with assisted tamping plus both automatic LatteCrema and a traditional steam wand.

One thing to know before buying

Opera can make excellent espresso, but it is still a semi-automatic machine. Smart Tamping makes puck preparation more repeatable; it does not remove the need to dial in grind size, dose and temperature for your beans.

My espresso still isn’t “perfect.” What should I adjust first?
Keep dose and temperature stable and change only grind size first. Fast/thin/sour usually suggests finer; stalled or harsh/dry usually suggests coarser.
Does Smart Tamping mean the machine is fully automatic?
No. You still use the portafilter, brew the espresso and texture milk manually.
Can I change the standby / auto-off time?
Yes. Opera has menu settings for standby/auto-off behaviour.
What if a component arrives cracked or missing?
Keep packaging, take photos and contact Café Liégeois promptly with the order information.

Preset drinks

Opera has five core presets: Espresso, Americano, Cold Brew, Espresso Cool and Hot Water. Cappuccino, latte and flat white are made with manually steamed milk.

La Specialista Opera FAQ

1. What is the difference between Cold Brew and Espresso Cool?
Cold Brew is a longer, smoother cold-extraction style. Espresso Cool is a shorter cold-extracted shot designed to be served over ice.
2. Does Smart Tamping use the same pressure every time?
De’Longhi specifies 20 kg of even tamping pressure.
3. Can I make a single or double dose?
Yes. The grinder and baskets support single and double dosing.
4. Can I use plant milk?
Yes. The manual steam wand can texture oat, soy, almond and other alternatives; cold barista formulations are usually easiest.
5. Which temperature should I use?
Darker roasts often benefit from lower settings, while lighter roasts may benefit from more heat.
6. Is the steam wand automatic?
No. You control pitcher position and texture manually.
7. Are removable parts dishwasher-safe?
De’Longhi identifies selected detachable parts as dishwasher-safe; follow the manual for each component.
8. Opera or Maestro?
Opera is the better value for assisted tamping plus manual milk. Maestro adds more temperature control plus automatic LatteCrema and a manual wand.
9. Why won’t the grinder start?
Check that the tamping lever has fully returned to its rest position and that the portafilter is inserted correctly. If the grinder remains blocked, inspect/clean the hopper and grinder path rather than forcing it.
10. Why does the grinder run but little or no coffee reaches the portafilter?
The grinder chute can clog. Empty the hopper as required and clean the chute/attachment area. Dark, oily beans can make buildup more likely.
11. What should I do if the grinder sounds jammed?
Stop grinding. Foreign material or compacted coffee can block the burrs. Remove beans and clean according to De’Longhi’s instructions; contact support if the obstruction cannot be safely cleared.
12. Why is espresso flowing too fast or too slowly even with Smart Tamping?
Smart Tamping standardizes tamp pressure, but grind size and dose still control resistance. Fast flow usually calls for finer grind or slightly more dose; choking/very slow flow calls for coarser grind or less dose.
13. How often should I descale Opera?
Descale when the indicator requests it. Frequency depends on water hardness. De’Longhi’s Opera cycle takes about 20 minutes and includes a required rinse stage.
14. Why is the descale warning still on afterward?
Make sure the complete programmed rinse cycle finished and the tank was filled to the required MAX level. An incomplete rinse can leave the alert active.
15. Why is steam pressure weak?
Purge condensation first, let the machine reach steam temperature and keep the nozzle holes clean. Dried milk is a common cause of reduced steam performance.
16. Does Cold Brew need ice?
Cold Extraction lowers brew temperature, but for the intended serving experience you should follow the recipe guidance and use ice where indicated. It is not refrigerator-cold straight from the machine.
